Mediators demystify the resolution process

Call a mediator first — not a lawyer!

If you have an unresolved issue with a neighbor, you might find some peace if you work with a mediator. But many people don’t know about mediation, nor how to find a professional mediator. It’s different than working with a lawyer, and it’s more likely to build a positive relationship or a binding agreement between the different parties.

In episode 23 of Soundproofist, we interview two of the busiest mediators in Ireland: Roísin O’Shea and Shane Dempsey. Their company, Arc Mediation, is based in Waterford. Roísin and Shane have successfully resolved many neighbor-noise issues, from private party grievances to public housing conflicts. They share an overview of how the mediation process works, and how they work step-by-step with the affected parties to understand the situation, look for the underlying causes, and finally, work towards an agreement.

“We have a factually based conversation about what actually is happening and also acknowledge what’s emotionally happening. Because they can actually be two completely separate things.”

Mediation services have an 80% success rate worldwide and they provide a methodical and unbiased way to resolve disputes. You’ll learn more about the how and why in this podcast episode.

Many thanks to Roísin and Shane for sharing their process and insights with us!
